Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)

The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) will provide financial support for those who install renewable heating, which qualifies for support under the scheme.

The scheme is due to start in April 2011 will lead to a rapid increase in the number of homes and offices heated by Air, Ground and Water-sourced Heat-pumps, wood-fuel, biogas, solar thermal, and waste-to-energy technologies. This will be driven by the RHI guaranteeing that the average household will be paid handsomely for the renewable heat they generate themselves.

Common examples of renewable heat technologies include: air and ground-source heat pumps, biomass boilers, solar-thermal water heaters and combined heat and power (CHP) plants which use renewable fuels.

Jimmy Ferguson of HAEL says, “We are confident that these proposals give the UK pretty much the best chance of generating over 10% of its heat from renewable energy by the EU deadline of 2020.”

The RHI scheme offers long-term, fixed payments based on the type of installation. There will be payments also for every unit of renewable gas fed into the gas network.

Ferguson said further, “It's true to say that renewable heat is the sleeping giant of renewable energy in the UK with a major contribution to make. Until we invest and build capacity in the renewable heat industry, we can't expect better value or better energy security - or look for more jobs to be created.”

Highland Alternative Energy Ltd (HAEL), is accredited in All heat pumps, Solar PV, Solar Thermal, Pellet and Biomass and Micro Wind through the Micro-generation scheme. They offer energy efficiency solutions in all traditional heating mediums and hold GasSafe and OFTEC qualifications.

HAEL was the first and remains one of the few companies in Scotland to gain accreditation in all Micro-generation technologies. HAEL also provides total Plumbing and Heating solutions including Under-floor Heating.

Installation example:
Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP ) at a cost of £1200 to £14,000.
Currently Grant stops March 2011
30% of installation capped at £4K, now only available for RetroFit
Interest free Loans ceased to be available on 16th June 2010
Fuel savings vary and depends client usage and Fuel type but can be as much as 50% if building heated in same way.

RHI income will depend on house, and requires a calculation, but here is a guideline:
House with ASHP
3 bed council house £1500 / year, for 18 years
4 bedroom house £2150 / year for 18 years
A large house £3000 / year for 18 years

Ground source pays slightly less per year but gets paid for 23 years and improved running costs are likely to offset this small difference.
